Work begins.
The School for Peace: Peace College is a relatively new initiative of NSWAS. While the School for Peace (SFP) has been running programs for over a decade, Peace College is literally just starting. The hope is to build upon a courses offered by visiting scholars with the hope of eventually creating an masters program at the College, an M.A in Peace. Pretty cool eh?
This is where I'll be working.
I've been told that it gets mighty hot. At least with UNICEF last year the office had air conditioning. No such luck with my new office I'm afraid.
I'll be working closely with the schools directors, researching, some clerical office work, proofreading English documents and web-posts, and just generally doing assignments as they come to me. I think my new colleagues were anticipating that I would be bouncing and waiting for things to do. They all laughed during lunch about how keen I was and how sometimes they might not have things for me to do.
I'll also have the opportunity to participate in work shops, do interviews of participants and participate in some discussions when youth groups arrive to do a program or an encounter! "Cool!"
The School for Peace offices are right next to the kindergarten. Everyday I get up, wash, eat and brush, and walk up the hill towards the offices with the kids from the village, there parents and the other daycare kids who come in from the surrounding areas. All day we are submerged in the sounds of kids playing, screaming, laughing. I grin as the tune of "Hot Crossed Buns" and "Miss Susie" in broken english and a mix of Hebrew and Arabic rhymes come hurdling boisterously over the wall. It's refreshing and often times hilarious.
Welcome to my musings from the Holy Land. I'll be your host as you follow me on a journey of discovery and faith as I set out to Israel/Palestine this summer. The posts in this blog and the views, opinions and comments therein are my own and do not reflect anyone's official views but my own. With that I hope you enjoy! Shalom, Salaam, Peace
Information
At the end of the Winter 2012 term I was offered on opportunity to volunteer as an intern in the community of Neve Shalom, Wahat-as-Salam, the Oasis of Peace, a community of Israeli Jews and Arabs. Founded in the 1970s, NSWAS was founded as a cooperative village, proving to the world that Arab/Palestinians and Israelis can live together in peace and prosperity.
I will be interning at Peace College within NSWAS this summer. Peace College offers courses in conflict prevention and peace-building and I will interning with them for a period of four months this summer.
NSWAS and Peace College have given me an opportunity to travel to Israel/Palestine, something that I have wanted to do since I was 12 years old.
Here I will post entries and pictures of my experiences within Israel and Palestine.
